Can innovation only happen in hi-tech businesses?

18/03/2011

The word "innovation" is often synonymous with the plate glass and metal of a modern business park, and their young, computer-savvy inhabitants. But new research has found that innovation is not solely the preserve of conventional hi-tech industries.

During the GAIN project SERIO spoke to over 500 businesses, across a range of sectors, and found that the tourism and leisure businesses were just as innovative as those working in advanced engineering.

As well as a talented workforce, appropriate ICT infrastructure and available finance, businesses who took part in the survey also said that their clients and customers were key drivers of innovation.

So, innovation is not only about shiny new workspaces - companies need a skilled workforce and must listen and react to their customers.

A full-length article about SERIO's work on innovation will appear in the April issue of Public Servant.
