Health and Wellbeing

We believe that health and wellbeing are shaped by a wide range of factors – from our education and income to our food and housing. This means that improving health and wellbeing involves more than the delivery of health services alone. We work with policy makers and service providers to deliver the intelligence they need to make informed decisions and strengthen practice.

Our Experience
Our team are experienced health researchers. We have carried out a wide range of literature reviews on behalf of the UK National Screening Committee, Public Health England on topics including anal cancer, Down’s Syndrome, cystic fibrosis and psychiatric illness. Our findings have informed UK policy on screening processes. We have also worked closely with colleagues in Dentistry to undertake a large review of research relating to oral health messages on behalf of NICE.

SERIO researchers have also applied their evaluation expertise to health initiatives. For example, we have evaluated the Big Lottery funded Shine50Plus, a project run by the charity Shine to support people over 50 affected by spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. We have also evaluated a hospital discharge service for homeless people led by a social enterprise, providing new understanding to inform the future delivery of the multi-agency service. A recent project, funded by The Arts Council, involved SERIO evaluating the impact of immersive art for people whose physical disabilities may have prevented them from engaging with art in the past.

Our research team have also undertaken applied health research projects. SERIO supported Plymouth’s Fairness Committee to carry out city wide consultation on fairness in Plymouth and used the findings to develop recommendations to tackle inequalities in the city. This included access to GP services and health inequalities. We have also undertaken a series of surveys covering alcohol attitudes and usage amongst young people at secondary school on behalf of Plymouth City Council.
