Screening for Physical Activity Levels: SERIO to Review Literature for National Screening Committee

07/12/2011

SERIO has been commissioned by the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) to review the research available on The General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPPAQ).

The UK NSC advises Ministers and the NHS in the four UK countries about all aspects of screening and supports implementation of screening programmes. GPPAQ is a screening test intended for use in adult health care (16-74 year olds) during routine general practice, providing an assessment of an individual's current physical activity. It is used to help inform a practitioner of when increasing physical activity is appropriate for a patient. Given the evidence on the importance of physical activity in lowering risks of major health conditions, understanding the role of physical activity questionnaires is critical.

SERIO will produce a detailed report, based on the evidence from the knowledge update, on whether GPPAQ as a screening tool meets the UK NSC’s criteria for assessing a new screening programme.  The UK NSC has 22 criteria which should ideally be met before screening for a condition is initiated.
