New Version of the Magenta Book Launched

HM Treasury has just launched the new revised version of The Magenta Book. This guidance covers all aspects of evaluation and is suitable not just for policy makers but any organisation contemplating undertaking or commissioning an evaluation.

This new version is more accessible, written clearly and takes a broader view of evaluation advice. It focuses on what works and what can be learnt for future decision making. It sets out the key issues to consider when designing and managing evaluations, and the presentation and interpretation of evaluation results. It usefully summaries key points at the beginning of each chapter, allowing people to dip into the guidance and focus on areas of interest.

A key message coming out of The Magenta Book is the importance of thinking about evaluation before and during the policy design rather than thinking about evaluation at the end of a project or programme. It also stresses the importance of good evaluation evidence to strengthen the effectiveness of policy and ensuring cost effectiveness. Some good learning points for organisations and policy makers and a useful addition to the available information on evaluation.
