Impact Evaluation of the British Art Show in Plymouth

SERIO has completed an impact evaluation of the British Art Show in Plymouth, 2011.

SERIO was commissioned by Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium to deliver an impact evaluation of the British Art Show in Plymouth (BAS7) in 2011. The Show is a major national touring exhibition that is being hosted in four different UK cities. It has launched the careers of many well-known contemporary artists and will be hosted by Plymouth between September and December 2011. This year BAS7 showcases work by 39 contemporary artists. Other local artists and art groups are also getting involved through a Fringe programme, a Constellation programme, and an educational programme, which involves numerous arts related events. Many of these are supported and/or part-funded by Plymouth City Council, through Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium.

The research used a range of approaches to understand how stakeholders, locals, art groups, businesses and the City itself may be affected by BAS7 in terms of economic impact, changes in the perceptions of Plymouth both by visitors and locals and changes in Plymouth's arts scene. During the events, we collected views and economic data from BAS7 visitors through a street survey conducted at its numerous venues. The research also involved interviews with key stakeholders, before and after BAS7, in order to give real insight into its impact on Plymouth. SERIO also collaborated with Plymouth University's School of Art and Media, who developed a unique research method that encouraged people to write blogs at each BAS7 venue.
