SERIO Assesses the Impact of Making Local Food Work

Drawing upon 87 different sources of evidence, SERIO identified the changes the MLFW programme brought about for food enterprises, their members, stakeholders and local people.

Making Local Food Work was awarded £10 million, over five years, by the Big Lottery Fund in September 2007.  The programme was run by a partnership of seven organisations led by the Plunkett Foundation and delivered through eleven individual projects that aimed to support and develop community food enterprises across England.  SERIO was commissioned to assess the overarching impact and changes brought about by the programme through an analysis of the individual project evaluations.  The final report for this study was completed in August 2012.

The research identified changes in a range of areas, including: skills and capacity development, the resilience of community food enterprises, the availability of local food, consumer patterns, awareness of the availability of local food and enterprise and job creation.  For the Plunkett Foundation however, the real value of the report was its presentation of the key lessons emerging from the programme, which will continue to help the future growth of community food enterprises.
