Evaluation of Sea for Yourself

Client: Plymouth Culture
Duration: 4 years
Funder: National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England Place Partnership Fund

Evaluation approach

To complement the creative and digitally focused nature of the programme, the SRU team will design an evaluation toolkit that feels natural, engaging and embedded within the creative process itself. Alongside a practical evaluation toolkit, containing question banks, survey templates and guidance for the team we will also incorporate a range of creative evaluation methods that allow participants to reflect, respond and share their experiences in ways that feel engaging and enjoyable. We will work alongside partners to design and create methods that feel comfortable and applicable to them.

The SRU will deliver tailored toolkit training sessions for existing project staff. These sessions are designed to upskill staff in practical evaluation methods provided within the toolkit. Drawing on our experience from projects such as the Ageing Well Torbay evaluation, where we successfully trained a team of Citizen Evaluators, and our ongoing research training for community organisations through the University of Plymouth’s Get Involved Awards, we will create a supportive and engaging learning environment. The training content will be developed in collaboration with Plymouth Culture to ensure it builds on staff’s existing knowledge and responds directly to their needs.

Interviews and focus groups will be used as core methodologies for evaluating the individual commissions, enabling us to gather detailed, first-hand insights from those directly involved.

Overview

Sea for Yourself (SfY) is an ambitious four-year initiative that brings together creativity, technology and community participation to explore and celebrate our relationship with the natural world. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Arts Council England Place Partnership Fund, the programme is led by Plymouth Culture in collaboration with Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park (PSNMP). SfY is shaped and strengthened by a network of key partners - including The Box, Real Ideas, Arts University Plymouth, the University of Plymouth and Theatre Royal Plymouth, whose expertise supports both the development and delivery of this innovative, city-wide initiative. The programme is comprised of three work strands; Creative digital commissions, Data & insights, and Talent development. The Social Research Unit has been commissioned to create an evaluation toolkit for use by the SfY team and evaluate individual projects.
